Why do they need a war with us?

The developments in the past week has taken me aback. Pakistan has started building troops in the border, conducting war drills and aircraft sorties over cities. While the Indian PM is hell bent in avoiding war and constantly reminding Pak that they only got to nab terrorists and their breeding grounds, Pakistan's ISI has started analysing areas it can attack in India including Kolkata.
War would not be a solution to this problem. Previously I was of the notion that waging a war and cleaning threats the Israel way would solve the problem. But now, not. Because, at the will be surrounded by enemies and endlessly we have to keep increasing our defence expenditure and cannot live in peace, like having your house besides a hostile neighbour waiting to seize a chance to jump into a fight for the silliest reason. War is bad for Pakistan only! It will accelerate their fall into the abyss. They already are economically in a pitiable situation. Their government has to focus into problems like public's literacy, hunger, health etc instead of spending on war. They already are not able to tackle internal political issues. War would swipe off Pak's financial reserves. And war has become very expensive these days. Just imagine if a fighter aircraft gets shot down you lose 400 crore rupees. A missile which can shoot down an aircraft costs 2-3 crores. For flying an aircraft for one hour you need to spend 4-5 lakh rupees on fuel alone. Just to give you an idea. You have to mobilise troops, food for them and the most precious thing is human lives lost in a war(I'm not a pacifist though).
Zardari should be called as Psuedo president. The real president is Kiyani, Army chief of Pak. It looks like ISI and Kiyani have joined hand in hands and taken all Zardari's power. It was evident when taliban announced that it can back Pak army if there was an all out war. Kiyani is the master mind behind all the war fury Pakistan is showing the world whereas Zardari's job is only to tell the world "Evidence is not enough, Qasab doesnt belong to Pak". He keeps denying whatever India tells.
This is going to continue until India responds immediately and gathers the support of International community as soon as it got the evidences. Diplomatic isolation will help us a lot. Pakistan can't stand that. It will be constrained and hence we can expect that it will act immediately. That could be the only solution.

Apophis and the question "who are we?"

This morning I noticed an article in The New Indian Express on "Apophis" written by Manoj K Das - " Deadly date with a dark god ".

Apophis is a Egyptian God (the snake in the picture), who is the only threat to Ra - the sun god. Apophis is darkness and it swallows sun in the night. I don't know the actual story but it is something like this. The Present Apophis is a real threat. It is an asteroid bound to strike earth by 2036.

The article talks about the asteroid Apophis(permanent number 99942) which as per observations and calculations by scientists has a relatively high probability of collision on earth. The asteroid is about 390 m wide and it comes very close to earth (well below the geo- synchronous orbit) in the year 2029 and passes through a gravity keyhole about 600 metres wide. A gravity keyhole is a small region in space that if an asteroid were to pass through it, its course would be altered. So this gravity keyhole alters Apophis' trajectory and this increases the probability of it colliding with the earth in 2036.

Collision probability is calculated and based on the impact energy of collision a scale called Torino scale is arrived at. This scale tells us the level of danger of that asteroid colliding on earth. Our Apophis has a Torino scale number of 1 in a scale of 0-10, which is relatively high. No asteroid in the past 1300 years had been a threat like this(Their Torino number were much lower). The probability of Apophis kissing the earth is 1 in 45000 . insignificant is it?? but it is not.. This is relatively higher.. More observations are being made to study its path and estimate its trajectory so that they can conclude if it will pass through the gravity keyhole. Figure in the left shows the probable impact locations. I can hear the sigh of relief from Indians.

Already people have started worrying about it in various parts of the world and scientists are thinking of ways to avoid collision. Already work has started in this direction to send a spacecraft to survey the asteroid, report its trajectory and observe its composition etc. Watched the movie Armageddon? Astronauts go, plant nuclear bombs and kill the asteroid coming to strike earth.. This time astronauts won't go. Missiles or rockets might go with a nuclear bomb payload to strike the asteroid when it comes close to earth, to alter its path. Some scientists talk about planting Solar Sails in the asteroid so that the photons will produce enough pressure which is sufficient to drift the asteroid so that it doesnt strike our blue planet.Don't worry, Lots of idea will pour in for sure 'cos everybody is eager to live.

Post impact (dont worry it won't happen!), there wont be any long lasting impact effects as "impact winter", Scientists say. But there would be a very big crater and millions of casualties if it struck in the land and very big Tsunamis if it struck in the ocean. The magnitude depends on the angle of impact and the velocity during impact. Estimated to be around 20,000 kmph.

I was wondering at one thing after I read this article. We are a part of a planet called earth. We are a group of molecules living. Here I say living 'cos there is something that makes living things distinct. The coordination of carbon, Hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, phosphor etc inside a cell happens in a right manner. They have got together in the right combination and the probability for this combination was worked out to be 1 in 1 followed by 260 zeroes as mentioned by Writer Sujatha in his book "Uyirin Ragasiyam". The combination formed a primitive cell, deep under the sea which multiplied itself (our ancestor!!) and till date has evolved into various forms of living beings. Reptiles like dinosaurs were dominant till a certain period of time, until some asteroid like the one that is coming for us, hit the earth to wipe out them completely from the face of earth.

We human beings, just imagine, are similar chemicals with probably a different combination which makes it think. We are a part of this earth. The ability to think has made us observe an asteroid coming towards earth using telescope by studying the doppler shifts and build rockets , nuclear bombs to save the planet from an asteroid hitting it, which is just a normal event in the universe. The capability of biochemicals living on the surface of planet to alter course of events to save a planet is something astounding.

Think of it.Isn't it something really amazing?

My Childhood love..

I wanted to write about this for a long time... Only now I did get time and resources to write about it.. I am writing things recollecting from my memory and I'll try to be as genuine as possible..

Last Sunday (21st sept,08) I was all alone at home... It was boring.. As usual I woke up late and followed the usual sunday routine of having a brunch, chatting with friends and stuff like that.. But I got irritated in the later part of the day (around 4 o clock).. Then, I took my Honda Unicorn to outer ring road. I started from K.R.Puram railway station end and drove towards Marathahalli... I decided to push it to its limits... There was a bit of slow moving trucks in between which made me impatient.. Then i crossed Marathahalli and went straight, took a U turn and decided to break my previous speed records (114 kmph - Of course, not so great). This time the road was clear. I had to cross one signal after which for about a Kilometre there are no signals or bumps in the road.. I revved my engine and quickly reached 80. I stabilized there for a while and then shot up.. It crossed 100 easily... 100 to 110 the acceleration was not so fast, but i managed to reach 110. From there, I increased my throttle and took a look at my speedometer often maintaining my focus on the road (thought it was dangerous to get into a pit or over a bump at those speeds in a two wheeler.) It had crossed 114, and then 116 and then 118 and finally I could hold it for few moments in 120 till I spotted a rift in the road some metres ahead..
I reduced my throttle and brought it under control.... WHOA.... It was ecstasy I'll tell you... My heart was jumping in joy... Then i came back home with great satisfaction, went to a nearby bakery and treated myself... (My friends would kick me if i told them what i did)...

All this started since I was kid.. I grew up in Madurai.. My dad had a Enfield Bullet.. He used make me sit in the tank and ride around our house before he left in the morning (I vaguely remember, I should have been 3 years old ) .. That time Honda had launched CD-100... I liked its engine sound and I hate Bullets high decibel sound ( Not now, of course).. That "dream dream" sound that comes from a Hero Honda CD-100 silencer was pleasing.. My dad sold his bullet and bought this ..( I used to assume like this, you know... I dont know why he sold his bullet exactly). Everyday I used to take a round in his bike and if my uncle or someone comes home, I ask them to take me on a ride in theirs...

I used to ask my dad to buy me a small bike... He used to tell me he had ordered one for me from Japan and it is coming by ship. He will explain japan is very far from here and ship travels very slowly.. so it'll take few months to get my bike.. So I kept waiting innocently..

I grew up.. I was doing my 5th or 6th standard when i learnt riding a TVS-50... It was a nice experience.. I used to go to my grandma's house ( a village in Cuddalore district).. All my cousins assemble there for holidays.. We take that TVS-50 and ride it through farms and explore unexplored places nearby.. It used to be fun..

When i was doing my 8th there was an uncle in my dad's office... (My dad had bought a bullet again).. We had moved to chennai by then... That uncle used to drop me in my home after my school... He takes me to Beach road before going home.. I used to sit in front and control accelerator and clutch for some distance... I enjoyed every inch I drove... you know, It was all fun..That too, Bullet has lot of excess power, more than what is required to pull you.. That makes you feel like a king in the road.. (Powerful) One has to experience it to appreciate it.. again in those holidays i took my uncle's Kawasaki and learnt it by myself.. (I should have contributed to some significant wear and tear)...

Now I felt as if I was big enough to own a bike...I started asking my dad a bike.. This happens in most of the houses.. Some guys succeed in getting their way, I couldnt.. I had to wait.. I didnt have a licence.. Sundays I used to take my dad's bike to near by places or just roam around in the streets of North Chennai..It was fun everytime I changed a gear, Every corner I turned and the feeling that I was controlling a machine which takes me wherever I want was really great. A couple of times I was caught by cops and my dad had to come for rescue..

Then schooling was over.. Got an admit in Anna Univ.. Didnt stay in hostel for a couple of years.. My friends had started buying bikes.. Again that urge resurfaced... Couldnt ask this time 'cos I was sure I wouldnt get it.. By the end of my final year, My sister had completed her twelfth.. She asked for a scooty.. It was granted.. Man! I asked for a very long time n didnt get it..Girls are lucky.. They are always pets.. Hmmm.. I joined in Bangalore as a Scientist.. I was finding it difficult to commute everyday, or , I would rather put it this way : I was finding a reason to convince my parents to let me buy a bike...

I loved bullet for its raw power and macho looks but I'm a lazy guy you know.. I hate spending time on maintenance which bullet requires a lot.. Moreover mileage will be an issue (It is like feeding an elephant) .I finally bought a Honda Unicorn, exactly one year after joining my job (2nd Nov)... I had Unicorn in my mind since it was made available for sale.. But before I bought it had undergone 3 version changes..

Although I'm grown up, I still play with my bike you know, setting speed records... I went so crazy, I used to remember what was my max speed last and in what conditions like "Dry road or after a shower" etc... My Dry road max speed record is 120 kmph till date and in wet conditions 106.. I use even numbers to mention my speed as my speedometer is graduated like that...

I have plans to explore roads of our country taking long rides.. Let's see.. Happy to be a wing rider..
